The Most Common Transmission Issues We See at The Garage

Let’s talk transmission.

As a fourth generation auto repair shop, our garage has seen it’s fair share of transmission issues over the years. From this experience, we can highlight some of the most common issues that drivers face with their vehicle’s transmission.

So here we are. The most common transmission issues that our auto technicians diagnose and repair on a weekly basis;

  1. Slipping transmission: One of the most common transmission problems is a slipping transmission. This occurs when the transmission slips out of gear, causing the engine to rev without any acceleration. Our team diagnoses this issue by checking the transmission fluid level and quality. If the fluid is low or dirty, we perform a transmission flush and refill the fluid to the appropriate level.
  2. Transmission fluid leak: A transmission fluid leak can be caused by a cracked seal or gasket, a loose transmission pan, or a damaged transmission cooler line. Our team diagnoses this issue by visually inspecting the transmission for signs of a leak and determining the source of the problem. We then repair or replace the damaged components and refill the fluid to the appropriate level.
  3. Transmission overheating: Overheating can occur due to a lack of fluid, dirty fluid, or a malfunctioning transmission cooler. Our team diagnoses this issue by checking the fluid level and quality and inspecting the transmission cooler. We then perform a transmission flush and replace the cooler if necessary.
  4. Clutch problems: Manual transmission vehicles may experience clutch problems, such as slipping or difficulty shifting gears. Our team diagnoses this issue by inspecting the clutch components and adjusting or replacing them as needed. Also called ‘Hard shifting’, this occurs when the transmission shifts gears with a noticeable “thud” or jerk, making it feel like the car is lurching forward.
  5. Delayed engagement: This happens when the transmission takes a long time to engage after the driver shifts into gear, resulting in a delay in acceleration.
  6. Transmission noises: Unusual noises, such as grinding or whining, can indicate a problem with the transmission. Our team diagnoses this issue by performing a thorough inspection of the transmission and repairing or replacing any damaged components.
